How to make a career change.
If you’re someone who is thinking ‘I’ll just deal with my job through the holidays and start looking for a new job in January’ then this post is for you. I think it’s natural for us to use this time of year to reflect on our lives and the personal and professional shifts we want to make in the coming year.
While a new year won’t solve all of your problems overnight, we can take advantage of the feeling of hope and freshness that come with a new start to provoke us to action. But the best way to ensure that you continue that action is to create an element of accountability, for those moments when your motivation fades and it feels so much easier to stay where you are.
A coach can be that point of accountability, but it’s much more than that. When I work with my clients I don’t tell them what to do. I provide a space where they can meet themselves weekly to renew their motivation and check in with their own internal compass. Together we work on how they can move forward towards their long-term goals and we find ways of thinking about it that make it approachable and doable.
Here’s what one of my clients had to say about working with me:
‘’After my experience with Kelsey, I would strongly advise someone with career changes coming up to work with a coach. It’s so different to have dedicated time and support weekly to talk through things. It’s not something you can really do with friends or a partner in the same way you can with a coach.
Working with Kelsey has helped me de-escalate the anxiety associated with career changes. Sometimes it’s really hard to figure out where to start and I think that in a lot of cases getting started is the most important thing. Kelsey helped me just get going on it. We broke down the problem into manageable parts and I took them on one by one. In the end, I got where I needed to be.
Working with Kelsey helped get me there faster and in a more organized way than if I had continued to work on my career transition on my own. It was motivating to know I had someone else to help me and make the overall experience less difficult. In a way, it was about accountability for me to take actions to move forward. But it was also about having someone to help me figure it out so I didn’t need to do it on my own.’’
