What is working with a Life Coach Like?

As I’ve started working with clients, I’ve realized that a lot of them do not know what to expect in working with a coach.  Obviously they didn’t think it would be bad or they wouldn’t have started, but they say things like ‘I thought it would be more woo’. Often they are surprised about how tangible and practical the work we do together is.

Here’s why one of my clients said recently:

‘’I had never worked with a life coach before, so I wasn’t sure what it was going to be like. I knew it would be a positive experience because I knew Kelsey before we started coaching, but I didn’t know what else to expect. I think I expected a life coach to be more ‘woo’, but Kelsey is very practical and grounded.

As someone who works in STEM, it’s important to me to think logically, and I was hoping that coaching would help me approach my career problem in a concrete way. Kelsey definitely did that. Her approach is logical and practical. We had great conversations during our sessions that helped me think through my problem clearly and decide on next steps. Because of coaching I was able to get so much done in just two months.’’

The thing is, our brains are not rational places. Unless you’ve done the work to be aware of your thoughts and how they are driving your emotions and behaviors then you are most likely making most of your decisions in order to feel good things or avoid pain.

When I work with clients I help them untangle their thoughts and emotions, so they can understand why they feel the way they do.  They can see why they struggle with the situations they are in.  And by the end of the conversation they have decided on purpose how they want to approach a situation in a way that brings so much clarity and relief.
